Hi, I’m Cassandra!I’ve always been the type of person who enjoys helping others, especially when they are experiencing difficult times. Sometimes life happens and when life happened for me, it led me down an academic path to studying Psychology at York U. At some point, feeling lost and unsure during my second year, I wandered into the psych department and said to the receptionist “I need help.” She set me up an appointment with Valerie, whose title I cannot recall but who opened up a world of possibility for me. Valerie told me all about the college programs that could lead me into the addictions and mental health field. After my graduation from York, I began my postgraduate program and placement at Humber (one of the many programs Valerie had suggested) which opened my eyes to so many of the gaps in our care and housing systems. Fast forward to present day me- I am passionate about breaking stigma surrounding mental illness and addiction and advocating that these issues should be treated just as urgently as any other health problem that people experience. I walk through the world with empathy, understanding, and a drive to always learn more. I’m a certified chatter box- my elementary teachers always said so- and willing to have a conversation about whatever’s on someone’s mind. Chatting and listening have allowed me to connect with many people and I hope to be able to utilize that in the addictions and mental health field as I look forward to a fulfilling career working with other professionals to be the change we wish to see.
