Youth Outreach Coordinator

Graduate Student Intern
As an intern for the Institute of Community Engagement and Scholarship I was facilitating, demystifying, and getting out the vote in our Metro State Votes 2020 Campaign. We used community organizing tools and relationship building in service of a consequential civic activity. At the heart of the nonpartisan campaign was community organizing tools of relationship building and conversations to increase voter participation. Relationship building is a strategy we used to deconstruct our socialized way of doing things, develop shared understanding, and create common ground with one another. I had the chance to create longer term relationships rather than transactional ones that often happen with canvassing or phone banking. I worked with 75 Metro students from four different classes to train and support them to host dialogues about elections and voting in their own communities.
