Profile bio

About Cassandra Uthoff

Currently aPhD student at the UFZ Leipzig, looking at the effects of microbiota composition on honey bee cognition as well as factors influencing the microbiota composition. Moreover I research acoustic and vibrational signals related to honey bee behaviour and hive status. In Septmeber 2021 I gained my MSc in Animal Behaviour at the University of St Andrews with a distinction. My main interest is social insects and especially bees. During my undergraduate studies, I have taken part in several modules about social insects and social groups and have conducted two research studies in the Laboratory of Apiculture and Social Insects. One as part of my Junior Research Associate stipend where I, as part of a team, studied the exploitative competition between honeybees, bumblebees and wild bee species on bramble and one as part of my undergraduate thesis where I studied the phenology and food sources used by the ivy bee. Moreover, I studied the effects of local weather conditions on the visitation rate and forager size of bumblebee workers during my master's thesis. I am a very outgoing, engaged and fast-learning person, I love new challenges and would love to continue my academic research career after the completion of my PhD to increase my knowledge in the field. Ultimately, I am aiming to become a senior researcher and lecturer at a University with a focus on social insect and bee studies.

Cassandra Uthoff work experience

A career timeline built from the work history available for this profile.

Research Assistant

Würzburg, Bavaria, Germany

I worked in the Zoology department of the University of Würzburg for six weeks after my undergraduate degree where I was involved in a project looking at the effects of climate change and particularly temperature on the emergence date in a wide range of pollinating insects. During my placement, I gained a lot of experience in working with trap nests, identifying the genus inside them, and updating and editing the relevant information in the spreadsheets about sex, emergence and sometimes parasitism for each nest. Some individuals were also frozen to be pinned and identified to species level, enhancing my pining skills, and letting me get to know the terms involved in identification keys for bee species.

Jul 2020 - Aug 2020

Widening Participation Student Ambassador

Brighton, England, United Kingdom

As a WP ambassador, I worked with schools from lower-income backgrounds and supervised these children during their visits. These included First Generation Scholar days, school visits, and subject taster days. Apart from supervision, I also gave a range of talks and activities with the young adults including subject taster talks, tabletop activities and holding assemblies.

Nov 2018 - Jun 2020

Senior Student Ambassador

Brighton, England, United Kingdom

As part of this role, I worked Open Days and Applicant Visiting Days on several weekends throughout the year as well as a tour guide for visitors and potential new staff. This involved being very organised with my time and while maintaining a high working standard to provide for all visitors. I had to be knowledgeable about the University, speak in front of large groups of people and sometimes organise campus tours when managing staff was absent.

Nov 2017 - Jun 2020

Junior Research Associate

Brighton, England, United Kingdom

This stipend is a competitive scheme for top-performing students and gives them a chance to conduct a twelve-week research project. I studied the exploitative competition between honey bees, bumblebees and other pollinating insects on bramble using exclusion methods. I worked with a PhD and a MSc student and conducted nectar volume measurements and identified pollinators by their species, developing my insect identification skills. The project also significantly enhanced my organisational, analytical and statistical competencies. Moreover, I came first out of 80 other top performing JRA students in the poster contest (which was part of the scheme) and was given the honour of presenting my research to academics and MPs at Posters in Parliament in March 2020. Moreover, I am also co-author of the now published paper in the Behavioural Ecology and Sociobiology Journal.
