According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 1 in 3 adults in the United States are not getting adequate sleep. As a newly registered polysomnographic technologist, I’m looking forward to being a part of the solution by acquiring accurate data to facilitate physicians with the diagnosis and treatment of various sleep disorders. I started pursuing my interest in sleep science by enrolling in the Polysomnographic Technology program at Southeast Community College, which gave me an excellent foundation of knowledge which I still continue to build on. After Southeast, I went on to complete my clinical education at Sanford Bemidji Sleep Center. There I gained insight from experienced technologists about the finer points of patient hookup, CPAP fitting, and sleep study scoring. I also had the opportunity to get real experience interacting with patients through every part of the sleep study process. I walked away from the experience with a good idea of the attention to detail and teamwork required to ensure a sleep lab runs safely and effectively. In my current position, I provide overnight support for persons with disabilities. This role has helped me to become an excellent communicator. I have learned to tailor my interactions to each individual’s unique needs. The experiences I’ve had have taught me so much about patience, understanding, and empathy. I feel that these soft skills in combination with my technical ability will be great assets to me as I pursue a career in sleep medicine.
