I always wanted to make a difference. I thought that meant social work- turns out it really meant behavioral work. No tricky algebraic equations- just cause and effect. If A happens, then B will follow. Simple, right? That's what I thought. Then you dive into the various situations and personalities that affect the behaviors. Plus the little environmental pieces that pop up without warning. Add in the hovering parent, the demand to serve more clients faster, and the BT who wants a raise (they texted you during session to let you know they very much deserve it). No longer simple. Yet, as it all comes crashing down, you find yourself sitting in the middle of a floor rolling a ball back and forth with a kid who verbally requested you to do exactly that when 6 months ago they refused to even say ball. It is in that moment you get lost. Right then and there you realize that you put up with all of the crazy because you made a difference in that one child's life. All I've ever wanted to do was become better by helping others be better. Becoming a behavior analyst has allowed me to watch growth in incredible ways and it is a job I feel at home in. It is a job that allows you to pause, put one foot in front of the other and break down all of the pieces until it is as simple as A leading to B.
