Elastrin Therapeutics is a South Carolina-based biotech developing novel therapies to reverse cardiovascular disease. The Elastrin team built a proprietary platform that targets and restores degraded elastin by removing the harmful calcification that stiffens arteries. Over the course of the internship, I have further developed my laboratory skills and learned more about the technology surrounding Elastrin. I have also worked on data transfer from handwritten lab notebooks to an electronic lab notebook that can be accessed by all team members around the world.

By completing Clemson University Bioengineering's Senior Capstone Design Program, I was able to work on a yearlong medical device design project with a team of five bioengineering students. This program consisted over two semesters that began with initial problem identification to a physical prototype that later could be patented. The design program has allowed me to gain experience and exposure in:-Proper documentation of a design process that include traceability matrix, MAUDE analysis, DFMEA tables, etc. for faculty to review -Verification and Validation Testing-Trade show commercialization sheets and video production design for the medical device-Collaboration with a pediatric surgeon at PRISMA Health Greenville-Organizing biweekly gate meetings with faculty and mentors as well as weekly group meetings-Collecting material processing quotes and budget proposal from medical device manufactures

While working at the Medical University of South Carolina, I worked with additively manufactured CoCrMoW metals that are commonly used for orthopaedic implants. Three different electrochemistry tests were performed on the metals that were both annealed and unannealed. After the tests were completed, the metals were examined under a DOM and SEM to determine the rate of corrosion and usability for implantation. I also gained experience in an orthopaedic clinical practice by viewing many surgeries involving implantations. This internship allowed for a real world view of implantations from a laboratory to a patient.
