Profile bio

About Cassidy Johnson

I am a Texas Hill Country “native” and fell in love with the outdoors at a young age climbing the oak tree in my backyard and swimming in the Guadalupe River. My early passion for nature inspired me to pursue a career in biology so I could better understand and appreciate the world around me. I feel so fortunate as a professor to be able to share my love of biology with my students in the hopes that I can inspire their personal journey to understand our shared, natural world. I have been involved in many conservation efforts here in the Houston area and use my platform as an educator to connect urban residents to the local environment. I have helped kids, teenagers, and adults get involved in conservation action regarding the restoration of local prairie ecosystems and the protection of the endangered Houston toad.I enjoy traveling and outdoor adventure and have tried a little bit of everything including skydiving, scuba, multi-day bike rides, kayaking, half marathons, and (my current favorite) hiking 14ers in Colorado! I also love art and enjoy painting when I’m not outside or in a classroom.

Listed skills include Biology, Teaching, Public Speaking, Research, and 17 others.

Faculty Lecturer

Houston, Tx, Us

I designed and currently teach the undergraduate course, EBIO 324: Conservation Biology Lab, where students participate in an authentic, conservation biology project in Houston's urban core. The focus of the class is to develop a plan to reconstruct a coastal tallgrass prairie on campus. Students must design and carry out a biodiversity analysis of nearby, rebuilt pocket prairies, as well as the target area on campus. Using the data collected, students research and design the campus plot. The students are also charged with creating communication pieces about the prairie and ultimately present their work to Rice's Arboretum Committee.

At Houston Community College I principally teach Biology I and II, Microbiology and all of their associated lab courses. To help my students save money on their education, I have transitioned all of my textbooks and classroom materials to OER. I am also becoming well-versed with online teaching tools and techniques to become a more versatile and effective educator.

My graduate work examined the effects of varying levels of gravity on the phagocytosis of human monocyte cells. We found that the phagocytic ability of cells exposed to either "microgravity" (simulated using free-fall conditions) and hypergravity was significantly altered after 48 hours of exposure; however, after longer exposure the phagocytic levels returned to normal. We suspect that cytoskeletal modifications are involved.
