This is a summer camp job. I worked two summers (2013 & 2014) for six weeks each. There were 2 weeks of training and orientation in May each summer. As a wrangler at Pine Cove, I was part of a team tasked with the care (feeding, grooming, tacking, mucking etc.) of our 43 horses. The personalities of these horses ranged from the calm, placid camper horses to more energetic and lively horses used by the wranglers. Along with the care of the horses, I as a wrangler was responsible for the safety of all the campers that came into the barn and participated in the riding classes. We taught each camper the basics of horse/barn safety and how to manage their horse, fitted them with a helmet, and then paired the rider with the horse that best fit the child’s personality and ability. Our campers ranged from 2nd-5th graders and each wrangler pair was responsible for 6-8 campers per class and teaching 6 classes a day. The classes were trail rides, arena, trotting, horsemanship, and trail class and all classes were western riding. Each wrangler was capable of teaching all aspects of each class. All classes were taught from the ground except for trail rides in which each wrangler rode.

This opportunity was a blessing and a half when it came my way. It helped me fulfill the last field experience requirement needed for my Educational Studies degree and paired my interest in early childhood psychological development with teaching. In this position, I was paired with the lead teacher and went with her on home visits. At first I just observed what each session was like and how it ran. Then she began asking my opinions on what activities to do with the child and parent and later allowed to plan and teach lessons. The age this program focuses on is 0-3 y/o and it helps parents learn how and what their child learns through play.
