Pozuelo De Alarcón, Community Of Madrid, Spain

The opportunity to travel abroad and work at the same time. Roughly forty hour work weeks for three months in Pozuelo, Spain, a small town outside of Madrid. Within this role I practiced providing care for three boys (8, 12, 15). This included daily English lessons, homework help, making meals for the family, keeping the house tidy and neat, establishing leadership in a home that wasn’t mine, and connecting with these boys to maintain respect throughout the household. When I wasn’t with the family, I typically travelled into Madrid where I had to use my Spanish to navigate a big city and make new friends so I could sustain my own self respect and gain my sense of independence in a new country. There were many hardships experienced within the household, as well as on the outskirts. My position as a disciplinary with the boys, pick potters taking advantage of an out-of-place girl, budgeting to have a great time while abroad, but also preserving my savings, were just a few examples of things I had to act on/consider daily. Managing these new afflictions made for a rough first month, however, by the second month and especially the third, it was smooth sailing. The connection formed with my Spanish family, as well as the friends I made, is going to provide me with a lifetime of valuable relationships and life lessons I couldn’t have gained from any other experience.
