Catandra Jones was born and raised in Warren County, North Carolina. She attended Southside Virginia Community College in Alberta, VA, where she earned a A.A. in Administration of Justice. While at SVCC, Catandra served in the Make it Happen organization, Criminal Justice Club, and served as a Student Ambassador. She was inducted into Phi Theta Kappa National Honors Society after completing her first semester. She continued on to attend GMU in Fairfax, VA, where she earned a B.A. in Legal Social Conflict Resolution minoring in Legal Studies and Conflict Analysis and Resolution. While completing a year of Peace and Conflict Studies at UNCG-Greensboro she was accepted into law school. She is currently enrolled at University of the District of Columbia David A. Clarke School of Law. While at GMU, she created a senior thesis based on a topic that she feels the most strongly about. This project focused on the psychological effect of racial biases in policing. It focused on the “fear” that is perceived when a cop detains a black or brown individual and how that fear is derived from racial stereotypes created during and post slavery that still exist today. Her goal of that project is to further define what can be perceived as fear that equates to racial biases. In doing so she hopes to lessen the gap in the law that allows these biases to be written off as justified and challenge what is considered qualified immunity. In addition, she hopes to create a stronger argument in abolishing qualified immunity as well as seeking further prosecution of officers who acted outside of their authority, while bringing justice to the victims. Furthermore, this could set the tone to repair police and community relations. Catandra began her criminal justice and passion for law as a correctional officer at Warren Correctional Institution. This experience granted her the opportunity to later become employed as a Federal Law Enforcement officer at the Federal Correctional Complex-Petersburg, Virginia. There she got first-hand experience of prison conditions and policies. She learned and gained a passion to help the wrongfully accused as well as those serving extreme sentences for non-violent offenses. She then made it her mission to create more programs to help reduce recidivism as well as challenging mandatory minimums. Once she completes law school, she plans to pursue a career in criminal law specializing in juvenile defense and human rights, giving a voice to marginalized communities.
