PhD Project: MicroPathID: Rapid in-field microfluidic system for diagnostic of pathogensPhD project focused on the development of a rapid, low-cost, and point-of-use compatible microfluidic-based system to identify the presence, in a raw biological sample, of a specific bacterium, with a focus on antibiotic-resistant bacteria. This included the development of (1) an efficient sample preparation module for cell lysis, (2) an isothermal amplification module, using padlock-rolling circle amplification (PLP-RCA) technique, and (3) the integration of photosensors to acquire the optical signal and provide a quantitative or qualitative response. Mentored 3 master students and 1 summer student. International conference attendance for both oral and poster presentations.

Research Topic: Amplification strategies for detection of DNA in microfluidicsDevelopment of a pressure-driven microfluidic device for nucleic acid detection. By combining the use of nanoporous microbeads and quantum dots, an increase in the sensitivity (low pM) of the assay was reached, compared with the previous fluorescence limit of detection, and the optimization of the detection assay allowed a decrease in the assay time from 1 hour to 10 min.
