As part of the CRUK Cambridge Centre's Early Detection Programme, my role was to facilitate the smooth transfer of early cancer detection tests from conception and prototyping, to first-in-human testing, towards application in larger scale clinical trials.

I worked on developing a capsule endoscope, based on novel holography-based imaging, to aid in the early detection of oesophageal cancer.

My role in this company, at its earliest stages, spanned pitching for investment, project management, intellectual property development and systems integration engineering.

At Cambridge Consultants, I enjoyed contributing to a range of multi-disciplinary instrument development projects, delivering high-quality results on tight timescales. I also gained experience of project management, product development and technical due diligence work within the regulatory framework of the medical device market.

My research at NPL was focused on single photon characterisation for quantum technologies. I built a superconducting nanowire single photon detector and designed, constructed and characterised a stable, tuneable cavity for high-resolution single-photon spectroscopy at telecom wavelengths. My role involved working with quantum-dot single-photon sources, designing experiments, performing precision optical alignment and using photon counting electronics.

During the first year of my EngD, I constructed and characterised a superconducting nanowire single-photon detector. This involved working with cryogenic, vacuum and electrical systems, and performing a range of detailed measurements. The superconducting detector system that I built was successfully delivered to NPL in 2009.

I spent my placement year working at the Wright Nuclear Structure Laboratory, Yale University. The Experimental Nuclear Structure Group were responsible for a tandem accelerator; as part of this group, I gained hands-on experience and was able to assist a number of visiting collaborators with a range of nuclear physics experiments.
