Catherine is founding director of Burd Haward Architects, a small, dynamic RIBA Chartered architectural practice, set up in 1998 with Buddy Haward. Based in Camden, the practice is recognised for its housing, educational and cultural projects, often on architecturally and historically sensitive sites.Burd Haward's first built project was a ground breaking low-energy family home that won numerous awards including the RIBA Manser Medal, and since then the practice have gone on to complete a range of critically acclaimed bespoke arts and residential projects. They are currently working as part of a team developing a 900 home residential landscape-led masterplan for West Kentish Town Estate in Camden.Catherine is an RIBA Specialist Conservation Architect and has delivered award-winning new build and complex refurbishment projects at a number of high profile historic sites across the UK. Most recently she has led 'Future Programme' at the Palace of Holyroodhouse in Edinburgh for Royal Collection Trust, an ambitious conservation, refurbishment and landscape project that has opened up previously closed spaces to public use and transformed the visitor experience at the Palace. She has completed award winning new build and conservation projects for the National Trust at Chastleton, Chartwell and Mottisfont. She currently working at Queen's College Oxford, where, following preparation of a strategic masterplan, the practice are implementing tailored interventions at the Grade I listed college buildings, including a new Porters' Lodge.Catherine is expert at advising on design quality at strategic, feasibility/masterplanning stage. A champion of design quality in the profession, she combines practice with her work in Design Review and is Chair of RB Kensington & Chelsea and LB Camden's Design Review Panels, as well as the recently formed City of Westminster’s panel. She is a longstanding member of the LLDC (Olympic Legacy) and Design Council Quality Review panels and sits on the Oxford panel. As director of a small practice, Catherine is directly involved with the design and delivery of all stages of projects the practice takes on, from inception, community engagement through detail design and technical delivery to completion. An expert critic, communicator and educator, Catherine has been an RIBA competitions and awards assessor, sits on numerous architectural and construction awards panels, and has taught and lectured widely.
