Instructor/Teaching Associate
* Led group discussions and meetings weekly.* Created over 120 multi-media and written presentations delivered in a classroom setting.* Evaluated and copy-edited more than 10,000 pages of written work over 5 years.* Collaborated with faculty to deliver high-quality learning experiences.* Consistently rated “best-in-class” by 97% or more by students for 11 consecutive semesters. At SU, I had the opportunity to teach undergraduate level history, and was responsible for between 50 and 85 students per semester.I taught primarily Ancient and Medieval history, but also worked in fields as diverse as Modern European and Modern American history. I taught three weekly sections of 20 students each (on average), and worked closely with the Professor to create assignments and syllabi. My job was to help the students engage with the material, absorb the information, and then construct arguments and express their ideas and opinions both in print and in classroom discussions. The students represented diverse backgrounds, as well as a range of sociability: from the painfully shy to the extremely outspoken.I graded and edited written assignments, ranging from brief quizzes to papers up to ten pages in length. I also assessed the students' participation in class.Teaching made me flexible and adaptable. I sometimes had a well-equipped classroom, complete with the latest technology; other times, a windowless room with a roll-in chalkboard. As a result, I tailored my teaching style to work well in either situation. I never knew whether the students would come to class prepared, or if I would have to jettison my plan and help them achieve an understanding of material they had not read beforehand. Teaching allowed me to develop strong skills in communication and diplomacy, both in person and in print. It made me creative in my approach to presenting complex ideas, and it made me an effective, strong leader, able to motivate people to do and be their best.
