Catherine Hill is a professional in their field. Colleagues describe them as "Catherine Hill was employed during the 2010/11 academic year as a Cover Supervisor and Mentor at Humphry Davy School. She quickly gained the total respect of staff and students alike and was a popular member of the support team. Catherine is an intelligent, well organised, polite individual with highly developed emotional intelligence skills. Within a short time she built positive rapports, was always willing to give of her time and undertake duties to support the school as a whole. Catherine works effectively both individually and as part of a team, demonstrated initiative in moving ideas forward (such as the effective use of data when mentoring) and works well under pressure keeping to deadlines. Her understanding of data relevant to the school at individual student and whole school level is very good and her personal attitude to self-development is reflected in her high attendance at training sessions. Catherine has high level ICT, administrative and organisational skills in addition to being an articulate and effective communicator, possessing excellent inter and intrapersonal skills. I observed her working with our most vulnerable and challenged students to overcome barriers to learning and promote a positive and supportive environment. She shares information in a considered, confidential and appropriate manner and I have confidence in Catherine’s ability to support the safeguarding of all young people; she is professional in all her undertakings. She is a team player, dependable, honest and of absolute integrity. As a mentor, Catherine had direct responsibility for small groups of students’ academic and pastoral care equivalent to the traditional form tutor role in many secondary schools. She established a purposeful and safe environment conducive to reflection upon learning and identified opportunities for learners to develop both within and beyond school. There was a clear understanding of the expectations for student behaviour and Catherine is a positive role model, encouraging students to take responsibility for their actions and appearance, promoting self-control and independence. Catherine has the knowledge, skills and understanding to be a highly effective educator. Her professional approach results in all her undertakings within education to be of a very high standard and I was very sad to lose her as a member of our team. However, it is easy to understand why she would wish to pursue a career in teaching and she has much to offer.
