I am a digital content designer and strategist for the National Deaf Children's Society. I'm passionate about digital communications and making content useful and accessible. This involves understanding the user and their needs, working closely with stakeholders to understand what they need to achieve online, and using research, analytics, UX, and clear communication skills and signposting to bring them all together.I have worked for local government - Islington Council and Barking and Dagenham Council - helping them relaunch their websites by writing and creating content that put the user first - producing content with clear and use-centered signposting and calls to action, and ensuring a mobile-first approach was taken at all times. I am experienced in using Umbraco, WordPress, Sitecore, Tridion and Drupal to create online content. I also have experience in using GA4 to measure content effectiveness and set campaign goals.I have a proven track record of running prominent digital campaigns for several development NGOs - including Christian Aid’s online response to the Indian Ocean Tsunami, the Haiti earthquake and Christian Aid Week; the DEC’s Gaza Crisis Appeal and its Ebola Crisis Appeal; and I was the sole writer and content creator for the website and the social media campaign for the Why Poverty? project - a globally broadcast series of documentaries that asked why poverty still exists in the 21st Century.I take great pride in making digital work – both for content users (or people, as I like to call them!) and organisations - and I enjoy working collaboratively with others to champion how this can be achieved.

One of the main aims of the new site was to make content easier to find and understand, and to make the site easier to navigate. This involved understanding the audience and their needs, working with stakeholders to understand what they wanted to achieve online, and using signposting (UX), clear writing, and calls to action to bring the two together. You can compare the two websites below:https://urc.org.uk/ https://urcarchive.org.uk/ The structure of content on the old website was based on teams and departments within the URC. As it was unclear what each team did or was responsible for, one of the big challenges when writing the information architecture for the website was to come up with a structure the user would understand and find easier to use. Content arranged by teams and departments was replaced with content structured according to user needs with clearer signposting and a more flexible homepage. Another challenge was the over-reliance on PDFs for making content available online on the old website, which causes accessibility issues and problems with SEO. Where possible, I worked to translate the content of PDFs into web pages. For example, on the new website fuel rates for church-owned cars is available as an at-a-glance web page and with the option for the user to download the PDF: https://urc.org.uk/your-church/guidance-support-for-churches-synods/church-finance/church-owned-cars/The final result, if you can ever use that phrase when it comes to digital, is a much cleaner website that's a lot easier for the user to navigate, engage with and find the content they're looking for.To ensure the new website continues to follow digital best practices, I meet regularly with colleagues to look at website statistics and review what has worked well and not so well.

I used UX research and Google Analytics to review their old website and to decide what the new website should deliver for the user and the organisation. I then worked on writing, editing and redesigning content for the launch of the council's new resident-focused website ensuring the libraries, heritage and art section put user needs first by making opening hours, facilities and events easy to find and accessible. I was then tasked with redesigning, editing and building the About the Council, residential recycling and rubbish, and business licenses sections. Throughout my time at Islington Council, I worked closely with multiple stakeholders and the digital development team to ensure business goals were translated into digital goals that put user experience and engagement first. -

My job involved liaising with member agencies to organise content - photos, graphics, articles and video footage that the DEC could use to promote its own appeal and also share with news channels like the BBC to help them inform the UK public of the members' work to help prevent the spread of Ebola in West Africa. I also managed the digital volunteers who worked for the DEC during the height of the online appeal ensuring they knew what was expected of them, they knew how the DEC systems worked and checking their social media updates for sensitivity and accuracy. -

Digital Editor And Social Media LeadWhy Poverty? Sep 2012 - Oct 2013London, United KingdomIn 2012 there was a global broadcast (70 countries in total) of eight documentaries asking why poverty existed in the 21st Century. I single-handedly developed and implemented the project’s social media strategy using mainly Facebook and Twitter to encourage people to watch the films and take part in a global debate about poverty. Working with international broadcasters, designers and translators, I was able to commission multilingual content to help ensure the Why Poverty? debate had a truly global reach. This resulted in a Twitter reach of 35 million and 6,000 likes on Facebook in the first three weeks of the broadcasts. With my background in international development, I wrote, commissioned and edited articles for the website, keeping it current to attract more viewings of the films and visits to the website.What had begun as a three-month contract was extended to a year due to the successful use of social media to promote the project and encourage the global audience to watch and engage in the debate well after the broadcast period. One example of an important, post-broadcast social media activity was when Prince George was born and I tweeted the question ‘What if Prince George had been born in Sierra Leone?’ linking to the documentary ‘Welcome to the World’ that looks at how your chances in life are affected by where you are born: http://www.whypoverty.net/video/welcome-to-the-world/. Assistant Website EditorChristian Aid Jan 2004 - Jan 2006Edited and updated copy, images and photos for the Christian Aid website and was responsible for running Christian Aid Connect, an online community platform.While in this post I launched my first ever emergency online appeal for the organisation in response to the Indian Ocean Tsunami. This involved me being the first person in the office when it was closed for the festive season, writing and sourcing images for the appeal and hand-coding the donation mechanism so that people could donate safely online. As a result, Christian Aid was one of the first UK NGOs to launch an appeal in response to this emergency. The online appeal raised more than £1 million. -
