• Working on habitat and visitor infrastructure management on RSPB reserves all over Dorset.• Work on heathland, ancient woodland, wetlands and wet grassland.• Including tree felling, reed cutting and burning, gorse, pine and scrub clearance, rhododendron spraying, installing and repairing fences, hanging gates, repairing hides and cutting paths.• Leading maintenance volunteers. • Carrying out safety and quality control checks and repairs on reserve infrastructure, paths and signage.• Survey work including breeding wader and wetland bird surveys, woodland point count, nightjar surveys, bat transects and surveys for Silver-studded Blue butterflies, Southern DamselfIies and reptiles.• Public engagement work in the visitor hut and on events including Big Wild Sleepouts, guided walk at Forage Festival, presentation to RSPB Phoenix group, corporate workparties, nightjar walks and Raptor Weekend.• Other skills acquired include off-road ATV driving, Merlin mapping and chainsaw use and maintenance.

Two days per week assisting with management of wet grassland and reedbed reserve along Thames Estuary (while spending rest of working week at Surrey Wildlife Trust).• Working with volunteer groups.• Work done included fencing, signage, reed cutting, boardwalk repairs, electric fence checks and clearance and predator monitoring.

Three days per week of planning and ecology work.• Considering documents submitted in support of planning applications, including ecology reports, advising local authorities on the likely ecological/biodiversity impact of the proposals and how features benefitting wildlife could be incorporated into developments.• Using MapInfo mapping software to find grid references for sites and information about the presence of important habitats and species. • Assisting with Phase I and baseline surveys for pre-development or habitat management purposes.• Assisting with setting up and monitoring of protected species surveys including reptiles and dormice.• Completing species lists and spreadsheets of findings.• Writing reports and creating report templates.
