Founding Director of the architectural practice Useful Studio which has a strong track record in environmental and social purpose. Key areas of expertise are in retrofit for education, commercial and residential, as well as place making and urban design including infrastructure and footbridges. The practice was recently a finalist in the Building Architect of the Year in Infrastructure and has received multiple awards for their work in footbridge design. Catherine was Deputy Chair of the Executive Board of the Useful Simple Trust, a multi disciplinary group of engineers, architects, sustainability consultants and communication designers, for 8 years. The Studio is a Certified B Corp, part of the Employee Benefit Trust and a recognised Social Enterprise. Catherine is currently Co-Chair of the B Corp Built Environment Group and a member of IABSE (International Association for Bridge and Structural Engineering) and ESWP (Engineers’ Society of Western Pennsylvania). With a commitment to education, Catherine is an External Examiner at the University of Westminster School of Architecture + Cities and regularly lectures on circular principles and retrofit for buildings, cities and places.
