About Catherine Roe

Catherine Roe has over 25 years’ experience of creating, developing, leading and advising foundations and not-for-profits.She currently leads Amal, an independent charity which works with many partners to enable creative endeavours that increase understanding of Britain’s Muslim communities among others and foster a stronger sense of belonging in the UK among our Muslim communities. Since 2006, as Director of CMR Consult Limited, Catherine has provided often very hands-on consultancy to foundations and philanthropists:• devising and piloting new philanthropic programmes• providing interim management at the CEO level, negotiating major donor agreements and establishing new trusts and foundations • mentoring philanthropists and foundation CEOs (including on governance), evaluating existing programmes and conducting due diligence on potential partners and projects• producing key communications materialsThis work has spanned fields as diverse as education, child development, arts and culture, social cohesion, disability, scholarship programmes and refugees. Catherine has particular expertise in higher education, the Middle East and relations between British Muslim communities and those of other faiths and none.For 12 years, Catherine was Director of the Said Foundation, working to effect lasting change in the lives of disadvantaged children and high potential young people in the Middle East. As Director of the Said Business School Foundation, Catherine helped to create and develop Oxford University’s Said Business School, now one of the world’s leading business schools. In 2012, Oxford University made her a Distinguished Friend of Oxford in recognition of this contribution. For many years, Catherine sat on the Board of the Said Business School and on its Global Leadership Council of which she is now an Emeritus member. With leading major gifts fundraising consultancy More Partnership, Catherine has also worked with not-for-profits to help them articulate the difference they make in the world and the ways in which philanthropists can support their mission.
