I would help in the office whenever needed. I was also the cook for the shelter which housed about 17-28 people on the average, and responsible for keeping the kitchen and dining room clean hopefully with the help of volunteers. Weekly we gave out food to the hungry as well by donations of our local supermarkets. We also made visitations to the nursing homes to help brighten their day. I also assisted in any events that were planned. In addition I helped operate and manage the Salvation Army Store in Martins Ferry, OH by cashiering, greeting customers and bagging merchandise, answering phones, running cash reports and and writing daily reports to hand into the office, made daily bank deposits, did sorting, hanging, and cleaning of items to put onto the floor, cleaning, organizing and decorating the store, keeping supplies filled, and handled employees who worked off their food stamps there. These stores helped bring in much of the revenue to help others in food assistance in making payments of unpaid utility, rent, and other much needed bills to be paid for the needy, clothing, gifts for the elderly and toys for the children for Christmas. The Salvation Army was founded in London's East End in 1865 by one-time Methodist Reform Church minister William Booth and and his wife Catherine as the East London Christian Mission. It's soldiers have continued to do GOD's work to this day. It is GOD's wish that we help others as much as possible in this world. We are the soldiers of the Salvation Army in GOD's Service and proud of it. Show less
