About Catherine Sutton
My most recent interests in childhood brain tumours survivors’ needs developed through a collection of work experiences and academic studies. I initially studied psychology and developed a specific interest in the brain, studying neuroscience at postgraduate level. Before, during and after my studies, I worked in a variety of settings, with children with special needs and developmental conditions. This cemented a strong interest in neurodevelopmental conditions and brain development. In other positions, I worked with adults with intellectual disability and stroke patients in supportive roles, have been a special needs teaching assistant and worked with children and adolescents with disability to access activities in their community. It was these experiences that led me to change direction as I could see how these conditions were impacting both individuals and their families in all aspect of their lives. Conversations with family members were instrumental in changing my research interests. It was clear that the research I had been interested in was for my curiosity but that the actual experiences and needs of these young people and families would not be addressed. I returned to my research journey and completed a master’s degree in research methods. I am aware of the impact of a childhood brain tumour on brain development and the long-term consequences due to my own lived experience of a malignant tumour as a child. However, a focus on cure has meant that there has been little attention paid to those who survive, often with disability and health consequences. Linking back to my earlier interests in development and the brain, this became a main area of interest.I was delighted to discover Success, a charity which focuses on’ life after cure’ following a brain tumour diagnosis in childhood. It is clear that there are, and have been, many unmet needs. My research focus now is to investigate the gaps that exist. My particular interest is in education, a system vital to our development and outcomes in life and often not addressed in rehabilitation. This is now my focus and I hope to develop these interests through further postgraduate research.
