As a museum outreach specialist and educator based in New York City, my greatest passion is ensuring that New York’s cultural institutions serve the diverse audiences that make up our city. Having recently received a BA in Anthropology with a minor in Art History and Valedictorian status, I am currently working at the New York Transit Museum as their Outreach and Grant Coordinator. In this role, I am leading work on an IMLS grant-funded project to make the museum’s programs more accessible to younger and more diverse audiences. My praxis is based on a community led-model, in which I do outreach to other arts institutions, community organizations, and local visitors to determine the needs of the population we serve and how we can better meet them. Through surveying, focus groups, and listening sessions, I develop comprehensive reports on how to improve our outreach and programming. Additionally, as a former Curatorial and Program Production Intern at MoMA PS1, I worked extensively on the museum’s outreach, with a focus on the institution's bilingual programming and community collaboration. To advocate for an expansion of PS1’s bilingual programs, I compiled a report on other bilingual museum programming in the city and data on PS1’s previous bilingual programming (including feedback deriving from focus groups I assisted with organizing). As a Cuban-American also bilingual in Spanish, this project had great personal significance. In regard to my other outreach work at PS1, I also conducted a survey project on the community collaborations that culminated in PS1’s mural project, After the Fire. From surveys with artists, organizers, and PS1’s staff members, I developed a report that recommended continued mural projects and discussed methods for improving these projects based on community feedback.Further, as an Education Intern at The Morgan Library and Museum, I worked on curating contact lists of partner organizations to collaborate with on programming (most notably Farsi and Arabic tours of our past exhibition, Enheduanna and Women of Mesopotamia, and our Teen Writing Contest). By sending outreach emails to these organizations, which included cultural institutions, schools, and libraries throughout the five boroughs, I was able to greatly expand the Education Department’s connections and develop long-lasting collaborative relationships. My extensive experience with outreach and community collaboration, as well as my personal commitment to museum accessibility, are the driving forces of my dynamic career in the field.
