While at the Middle School, the social studies department mobilized to implement the new standards within their already civics based American Studies curriculum for the eighth grade. Witnesses to the tumultuous political climate of the time, we were eager to teach students previously missing meaningful material. Amherst, Massachusetts is home to an ethnically and socioeconomically diverse population. Growing up in a similar environment, I have a passion for equality and dismantling structures in the way of access to opportunity. All teachers, especially social studies teachers, have a crucial responsibility to make sure all students have access to these opportunities. This happens through the construction of a healthy classroom environment and thoughtful development of culturally responsive, student centered lesson plans. In this fast paced immersion program, I drew on my innate facilitation skills to help run meetings with team teachers where we strategized various lesson plans for students, planned field trips, and participated in parent meetings. This experience gave me the confidence to collaborate in a team, as well as to make the space for others to participate. As a member of the team and as a teacher in the classroom, I used my strong communication skills to make sure colleagues and students felt supported. I believe this specific skill is foundational to my strengths as an employee. I am able to communicate empathetically with a diverse array of people and it is central to why I am drawn to education and community building. Show less
