In this team leader role, I discovered a passion for optimizing working methods. Having observed firsthand the impact of smooth processes on people’s day-to-day, I started hosting a monthly meeting with the entire translation team in which we brainstormed ways to eliminate friction points in our processes. The goal was to make work more enjoyable for everyone, improve the company’s efficiency, and nurture a culture of information sharing and continuous improvement. I was also in charge of a team of talented young translators, helping them build confidence in their linguistic judgment and hone their skills. To my delight, some of them quickly started moving on to editing roles.

When I took on my new position, Textualis was a small and growing company that would triple in size in a few years. In addition to translating and editing hundreds of documents each year, I played an active role in recruitment and training efforts, which included reviewing translation exams, making hiring recommendations and supervising internships.

During this first experience as a freelancer, I had the privilege of collaborating with the prestigious contemporary art magazine Esse Arts + Opinions. I was involved in every stage of publishing, from translating feature articles and discussing with authors to proofreading and bilingual editing of other people’s translations.

I was extremely fortunate to be part of the Idem team early on in my career. Surrounded by a top-flight group of editors, I translated approximately 350,000 words every year for a diverse and discriminating clientele. I also gained valuable experience in client relations management, among other things by liaising with a major academic client to maintain a productive dialogue and provide helpful feedback for the translation team.
