About Catherine Ordway, Phd

I'm an academic in sports management and a sports lawyer, specialising in anti-corruption and integrity; a tribunal member, media commentator and consultant. I have assisted sports including: AFL, archery, athletics, baseball, combat sports, cricket, cycling, football, golf, handball, rowing, rugby, softball, swimming and triathlon in governance, selection, anti-doping and code of conduct disputes. I teach 'Sports Integrity Ethics & Law' and 'Leadership in Sport' to Sport Management undergraduates at UC. I'm a Senior Fellow at The Uni of Melbourne teaching "Sports Integrity & Investigations" in the Master of Law. I've also previously lectured at La Trobe Uni and UNSW. I have consulted to a number of Olympic Games bids (Budapest 2024, Krakow 2022, Istanbul 2020 and Rio 2016) and the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games. My recent international presentations include: presenting (with Moya Dodd) on “FIFA Governance Reform" at the Football Feminism–Global Governance Perspectives Symposium, The Jean Monnet Center at the New York Uni School of Law, on my PhD research at EASM in Spain, presenting on Education 4 Justice Module "Gender Equality" at Qatar University, following the review sessions for the UN Office for Drugs & Crime (UNODC) E4J in Greece; presented on "Values, Ethics & Diversity: Hanoi experience" at the UNODC Anti-Corruption Academic (ACAD) Workshop, Singapore; "WADA's Governance" at Tackling Doping in Sport, London; "Sports Corruption" at the G20 Anti-Corruption Conference, Germany; "Sports Corruption: Justice and accountability through international legislation" at the Play the Game Conference, Denmark and Chaired the "Corruption in Sports" session for ACAD, Moscow. I regularly present for ANZSLA and I'm a co-founder of WiSL (women in sports law) and WoB (Women on Boards).I am a former national squad member in Olympic Handball, competed for the Australian Capital Territory in rugby union, and for UniSA in intervarsity fencing. Representing the Australian Olympic Committee, I appeared in 30+ anti-doping hearings before CAS in the lead up to the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games. I graduated with my PhD (sports management) at the Uni of Canberra in October 2019 examining a range of sport corruption risk management strategies including inter-agency collaboration and gender equality. "Sports Integrity & Investigations" intensive Masters of Sport Law subject with Hayden Opie Sport's shining image is threatened by corrupt practices around doping, match-fixing, awarding event hosting rights and elections; some with links to illegal gambling and organised crime. Sport bodies and governments around the world are taking legal and regulatory steps to counter these threats. Students will explore this new frontier of sports law from criminal laws to mandatory information sharing and monitoring arrangements.
