Author: Down To The Marrow

Published By Bryant Park Press

Greater New York City Area

My memoir, Down to the Marrow, was published by Bryant Park Press in 2008 under the name of Catherine Ann Stone. It's a satire about being stuck in the Health Care System. People laugh when they read it.

2008 - 2009 ~1 yr

President & Communications Designer

Manhattan Concepts

Westport, Ct

Working for others as a graphic designer and art director for nearly seven years made me a bit antsy. This led to founding “Manhattan Concepts” my own startup. Soon, we were designing and producing print materials for Fortune 500 Companies all over the USA.Consulting with Chesebrough-Pond's Executive Team (later incorporated into Unilever) was dream consulting at it’s finest. Traveling to Chesebrough factories abroad. Art directing photo shoots for their corporate magazines. Designing the magazines themselves. It didn’t get better than this.Producing glitzy materials for the Chesebrough Corporate Grants team was especially rewarding. Our work included developing children’s art contests in conjunction with the Smithsonian and the National Gallery. We also sponsored the arrival of the Russian Faberge Egg exhibit at the Metropolitan Museum in NYC. I spent much of my time in the board rooms of companies such as GE Capital, Unilever, Chesebrough-Ponds, Bayer Pharmaceuticals, Playtex, Charter Group, Fuji Film, Energizer, Pitney Bowes and Timex. Working hand in hand with CEOs and his VPs, ensuring their key messages were conveyed clearly across all communication materials. These print materials helped global employees remain informed and inspired. This type of content has now moved from print to cyberspace and so have we!

1985 - 2000 ~15 yrs

Senior Art Director

Various Magazines

New York, Ny

An editor is king of a magazine’s content and an art director is queen of the visuals. When an editor presented an article to an art director, in this case me, it was time to conceptualize the accompanying graphics, photography and illustrations. My style of bossing people around turned out to be a style that led to great results, all accomplished in a fun and lively atmosphere. With my teams, we created science and fashion magazines that sold well to their readership base and made the investors very happy. This experience helped me understand the challenging corporate cultures my current clients operate within. As an art director, all my previously learned skills finally melded into a cohesive package.

1983 - 1985 ~2 yrs

Annual Report Designer

Page Arbitrio Resin

New York, Ny

Before the internet, printed annual reports were BIG. The annual report was the most important publication for a company to present themselves to clients and investors. When I first started working here, I nearly fell off my chair when I realized the development and publication of such reports could cost around a million dollars. This was a big number for someone like me, a fledgling earning 10k a year.Working with clients such as Revlon, 3 Mile Island and IBM was so exciting and worldly. Graphic design took on a new dimension with great responsibility. On the one hand these reports had to be completely accurate and on the other hand outrageously creative. Learning to balance this was initially painful, but by going through the arduous process of combining creativity with structure was amazing. It taught me how visual design can convey business concepts.

1979 - 1983 ~4 yrs

Senior Graphic Designer

Cohen Pasqualina Advertising

New York, Ny

These two guys, my bosses, were the darlings of the NY advertising scene. They had come out of Wells, Rich & Green to start their own agency and immediately landed a bunch of Hollywood clients. We created posters and advertising materials for 1st run films and it was so exciting. I learned that creativity could be BIG and BOLD. Meanwhile I observed, almost scrutinized, how this agency business was run. I developed the entrepreneurial skills I needed to run my own successful company. When Cohen and Pasqualina decided to move to LA without me, they bequeathed the entire contents of their Manhattan Office to me. I still use some of their furniture in my Westport, CT office and use it as inspiration when I get stuck and need fresh ideas.

1978 - 1979 ~1 yr

Graphic Designer

Henry Wolf Productions

New York, Ny

Working for world renowned graphic artist and photographer Henry Wolf was exciting on more levels than I could have dreamed for my first job. Working with the founder of magazines such as Esquire and Show Magazine was an amazing start to my career as a graphic designer. I never knew who would walk through Henry’s door next. Shirley Maclaine or Ringo Starr for a portrait. A set crew to build an elevator in the middle of our studio to shoot a cover for Cosmopolitan. The head of Parson’s school of Design to proof some of my work about to go to press. Never a dull moment.Liaising with clients such as Saks, Bloomingdales, Ferragamo, set me up for life with skills to move with equal ease in the corporate, fashion and creative worlds. Never mind doing so from a renovated carriage house on East 73 St in NYC! Few people have influenced me more than Henry Wolf. Ideas just crashed into his brain and his ridiculously high standards and demand of visual excellence have influenced my work ever since.
