About Cathy Healy
Cathy Healy believes that working together on projects with people from other cultures leads to tolerance, which is more essential than ever. She is a member of the Partners of the Americas International Board, chair of the Membership Development Committee and active in projects with Colorado, Texas, Utah, La Paz/Altiplano, and Peru chapters. She also is a member of the IEARN-USA Advisory Council. In both NGOs, networks of diverse volunteers work on projects to improve lives and understand others. Backstory: Cathy comes from a family ranch in Wyoming, where she has maintained strong roots while seeing and explaining the world with published articles and novels. As editor-in-chief of the Organization of American States' award-winning Américas Magazine, Cathy was recruited by the National Geographic Society to invigorate its internal magazine. There, two events transformed her life. 1) Reporting on Geographic's Kids Network, a pre-Web science curriculum that used telephone lines for virtual exchanges worldwide, and 2) joining the DC-Brasília Chapter of Partners.Cathy led the first Geographic publication to go completely digital, and she was the founding editor of Geographic's intranet, named one of the world's 10-Best Intranets by Nielsen Norman. In her off-hours, she began to advocate, organize, recruit, and connect teachers and students in virtual and physical exchanges. These actions included being the catalyst for DC-Brasília's Ambassadors of Hope exchanges (eight in total) that inspired the model for the US State Department's Youth Ambassadors program, now in 26 countries. After retirement from Geographic, Cathy moved into full-time advocacy, with a year at Stanford as a Reuters Digital Vision Fellow. There, her "humanitarian project with a tech solution" focused on improving English-language literacy for public-school students in DC and Brasília through the use of iEARN's 100 K-12 projects in its network of 140 countries. At the same time, Cathy has been active in Wyoming. Currently, she and a team of classmates are adding to the Washakie Museum's oral history collection with a sub-collection: Worland's War Babies: 1941-1960. Through the end of 2018, she was vice president of the LU Ranch, recognized for its sustainable practices and technological acumen—including being the first ranch to use computers.
