The Graduate School (OGS) has been a residency program since its inception in 1980. In March 2020 (Spring Term), news of COVID suddenly reached the graduate institution while in session, serving students on campus who were in residency from places around the globe. Students scheduled to attend the next week as from as far away as Fiji. Travel plans were canceled, and I had to lead the school into unprecedented territory as we prepared to offer Zoom-based ‘virtual residency’ classes,This suddenness of the situation meant an unprecedented and immediate reengineering of how OGS delivered classes. The CAO/Dean position morphed into an extremely lean and agile job that focused on intense, ongoing changes. In Fall 2020, a new doctoral program added complexity to scheduling and coordinating services; in 2021, an additional teaching site was established that required an intensive site accreditation review, and OSG sold 80% of its property and assets. In 2022, the annual Library of Congress and Oxford University trips were resurrected while preparations were made for a Ten-Year re-accreditation review during the expansion of the virtual residency programming. Duties of the CAO/Dean of Faculty roles expanded exponentially without precedence or contextualized blueprints for operational and strategic guidelines Oversight of the Graduate Research Committee, doctoral research, and dissertations, set standards for scholarly, academic research. Responsible for faculty and professional development.
