Leeds Mencap is a local, independent charity supporting children and young people with learning disabilities, their families and carers in Leeds. Leeds Mencap offer support to the whole family and aim to create opportunities for children and young people to develop skills, knowledge and confidence, to socialise with their peers, to have time to themselves and have the chance to fulfil their aspirations. For parents they provide information, support and guidance and the vital opportunity to meet other parents who understand how having a child with a learning disability can sometimes be a lonely, frustrating and confusing experience but with whom, like any parent, you can share and celebrate your moments of pride and joy in your child. Leeds Mencap are passionate about supporting children and their families in the early years and also supporting them as early as possible in challenging situations. As CEO, I had the privilege of working with an incredible team of staff, volunteers and was supported by a small but hugely committed and talented Board of Trustees. Together we moved that little bit closer towards a future in which people with learning disabilities are fully included in all aspects of society and accepted for who they are.
