About Cathy Comber
I'm dedicated to the wellbeing of all New Zealanders. My journey includes transitioning from senior management to co-founding a charitable Trust and starting a private practice, combining my passions of counselling, coaching, mentoring, and leadership.As a full NZAC member, and an accredited Te whatu Ora counsellor, I offer online and in-person sessions to support individuals and people in relationships of any kind on a wide range of issues, both personal and professional. My BCom (with psychology) initially served me well to embark on my senior management career. After leaving the University of Cape Town, and South Africa, I resumed my career with diverse roles at the University of Auckland. In the course of my time, I managed large teams (line managing up to 30 people), departments with hundreds of people, and budgets of up to $53 million per annum. A Postgraduate Diploma in Business (Human Resource Management) benefited my opportunities to engage in people initiatives.I built high-performing teams, focused on staff development and engagement, and excelled in change management and business improvement. I collaborated with stakeholders from wide-ranging industries and honed my skills in coaching, mentoring, and leadership. In addition to my work and studies, I was (and still am) actively involved in community organizations. One was volunteering as a Lifeline counsellor. I was in a privileged position to witness the challenges people faced in and out of employment, some with lives disintegrating.I left the University, and following my passion, co-founded Loneliness New Zealand Charitable Trust. We aim to combat loneliness, particularly for those struggling with prolonged or chronic loneliness. This commitment led me to pursue a Postgraduate Diploma in Counselling Theory, followed by a Master of Counselling. My thesis pioneers loneliness and pluralistic counselling. I also participate in the Global Initiative on Loneliness and Connection, connecting with world experts on loneliness.In the pursuit of becoming a full member of the NZAC, I was fortunate to have counselling and mentoring roles in other organisations. These extended my understanding of youth both at school and in alternative education and women who had experienced domestic abuse. Two organisations that I served as a Trustee, TalkLink and LifeKidz, have given me a significant appreciation of the disability sector and the struggles families have, as well as what it takes to build a charitable trust.My immense gratitude to those who invested in me.
