About Cathy Exendine

As Director of Patient Care Services at Advent Health I led an exceptionalstaff that ensured our Hospital was the Top Rural Hospital , received an A rating by the Leapfrog Group, and met the standards of a Critical Access Hospital by The Joint Commission. I was also the safety Officer and Emergence Management Lead for our 3 Hospital system. This included grant management, purchasing equipment and maintaining it, and interacting with local, State and Federal agencies. During my almost 13 years with Florida Hospital Wauchula (later Advent Health) I was able to assist in building a team of nurses that moved the Emergency Department into excellent patient care.This was done through three major processes that included building a better reputation of the Department, education of the staff and physicians, and providing excellent patient experience . Renovations increased the Emergency department from 7 beds to 14 beds and saw much needed new and updated equipment obtained through grants and innovative budget utilization.Education was a priority, so I brought and/or taught classes to staff including Trauma Core Curriculum Course (TNCC) and the Emergency Nurses Pediatric Course (ENPC), S.T.A.B.L.E. Course, Disaster training and preparedness, Neonatal Resuscitation Provider Course (NRP), Certification Review courses and many others. Administration of the State Office of the Assistant Secretary for Preparedness and Response (ASPR) Grant for our Hospital that provided funding for training, equipment and drills was also part of the daily responsibilities that I dealt with. This Grant provided much needed equipment and training for the hospital and the staff. As a Critical Access Hospital we transferred approximately 100 patients a month so ensuring we had agreements with tertiary facilities and working with these facilities to ensure smooth patient flow was also a necessary part of my duties.Updating policies and procedures, budgets, staff hiring and retention were also part of the everyday responsibilities. Preparing for The Joint Commission (TJC) visits and accreditation, addressing any State complaints and visits and working with our collaborative partners in the Community were important responsibilities.Speaking at Community events and meetings such as Rotary and Kiwanis; serving on Boards such as Habitat for Humanity and South Florida State College EMS Board were all parts of being involved in the local Community that brought favor to the Department.

My primary role was to help with the day-to-day running of the department, making sure that it was staffed appropriately and that we have tools and resources needed to provide excellent patient care. Other parts of the job included managing the budget, writing policies and procedures, keeping staff updated and informed and encouraging educational opportunities for staff so they are able to keep their skill sets up. Ensuring excellent patient experience and staff experience was also part of the duties. I worked alongside my staff on a daily basis keeping my hand in direct patient care. I was available to my staff at anytime if they had questions or concerns. I also had to manage the State ASPR Grant and ensure staff in the entire hospital were trained in disaster management and preparedness.During my tenure as Manager we maintained excellent patient care rankings and received awards for this. Our ED was one of the first to go with direct bedding and through innovative ideas maintained the ability to have a "no-wait" ED at all times.
