About Cathy Maclennan

I am a children’s author/illustrator/designer and artist. I am always looking for a variety of diverse projects to engage with and develop my skills further. In the future, my ambition would be to produce a body of my own artwork to exhibit and possibly sell – also to take on artist’s residencies, but currently I am mostly involved in children’s publishing, school/library workshops, and design projects. Also some mural painting, curating and personal artwork.I was born in Zimbabwe. My early childhood was very free of agenda and mostly spent outside with the beautiful plants and creatures of the African landscape. I was lucky enough to have been taught to paint, freely and joyfully, by children from the Shona tribe and this has always greatly influenced the content and style of my work. I have a studio in the garden. It's a great place to think and create. In recent years it has been a successful and popular venue on the Wokingham Arts Trail.

    Author/Illustrator Of Children'S Books
    Self Employed. 2005 - Present
I have written and illustrated five picture books for children, published by Boxer Books www.boxerbooks.com and am currently developing new ideas.Chicky Chicky Chook Chook, Monkey Monkey Monkey, Spooky Spooky Spooky, Bunny Bunny Catkin and When When When Will It Be Christmas are known not only for the quirky and original illustrations, but the writing style, which includes onomatopoeia, rhythm, rhyme, repetition and alliteration. This means that they fit well with the school literacy curriculum and has led to me developing popular workshops for schools and libraries. My books have been shortlisted for the ‘Read It Again’ Award 2008, the Norfolk Libraries Picture Book Award 2009, the Kate Greenaway Medal in 2010 and most recently the V&A Illustration Awards 2012.They are published in the U.K. the United States, South Africa, New Zealand and Australia and are available in all bookstores and online retailers such as Amazon.I currently have books under consideration with Boxer Books and other publishers and hope to work on many more or perhaps illustrate for another author. The monkey character from Monkey Monkey Monkey is the face of the Little Explorers library loan scheme for the Under 5s, at the Wokingham, Reading and East Sussex groups of libraries. Several other authorities are currently considering the scheme. I designed certificates, cards to be stamped, posters and colouring sheets for the scheme and took part in the launch in 2011.I wrote a story for the CBeebies television programme Driver Dan’s Story Train, broadcast in 2012 - and hope to write for the next series too.I regularly visit schools and libraries to talk about my work and give workshops.
