My research is directed at understanding outcome trajectories of older adults after stressors such as injury or hospitalizations, as well as lifestyle factors (exercise, diet, mind/body influences) that mitigate decline. I'm interested in development and implementation of interventions to empower middle-aged and older adults to effectively manage their trajectories of aging. Prior work identified the high prevalence of physical frailty among injured older adults and led to a study that determined the influence of pre-injury cognition and functional status on one-year outcomes (functional decline, mortality). Most recently (since 2019), I've developed and published three interventions: 1) a literacy-friendly booklet on aging, titled, "Aging: Important Things to Know"; 2) a health and wellness program known as AFRESH (Aging and Frailty: Resilience and Energy in the Second Half of Life); and 3) a science-based communication intervention, MitoFit, that emphasizes the importance of mitochondrial health for prevention of chronic disease, functional decline and disability.
