As a result of a restructure within IT, my previous job ceased to exist and I took on a newly defined role as IT Strategic Planning Manager, within a new “IT Strategic Planning” team. This retained the IT directorate programme management but added risk, governance, resource management and strategic planning, and no longer included direct project involvement. I had a small team of 3 reporting to me, covering programme and admin support.

My role covered the project management of IT projects and of the technical element of business-led projects, using a PRINCE-based approach. The projects can come from anywhere in the organization, for example pilots for our eAssessment and Learning team such as the use of wikis and blogs for assessment, new business processes (online results for candidates via MySQA), or migrations (SAP for HR and Finance, migrating from Cyborg and eFinancials). We also have technically driven projects such as a major upgrade to our database environment (ingres based on RedHat). As a project manager I work closely with the project team as well as coordinating with business stakeholders and senior management.From Nov 07 to April 09 I managed the team Business Analysts (7) who worked on projects. In April 09 the directorate was reorganized, with the Business Analysts moving to another group, and I set up, recruited and managed a small team of Technical Project Managers, The Technical Project Management team provide supported all projects with an IT element; my role involved ensuring the team has the people, knowledge and skills to cover both current and future projects. My team covered a mix of projects including both internal development and external partners, one of whom used an agile approach. Our scope included all project-related technical work, both infrastructure and software development.In 2009 I also started managing a sub-programme board looking after the technical projects. In January 2011, a new programme structure was agreed and I became programme manager for the Information Systems Programme. The Information Systems Programme not only looked after the existing technical estate but aimed to put in place the key strategic architecture needed to enable and support future business. The programme and portfolio managers work together in a Community of Practice to establish standards for processes and outputs.
