About Catherine Clark
In the early 1990s, the co-founder of Sesame Street told me during a lunch interview his foundation liked to put people, money, and ideas together to create social good. I almost choked on my soup to realize his enterprise had helped teach ME to read, as well as millions of others around the world. I wanted to make an impact like that! (Yes, I took the job.) Today, 30 years later, I have put my energy into improving how people, money, and ideas can come together for good. I help entrepreneurs and investors create more and better impact for their stakeholders, which is all of us. I now call those entrepreneurs "social entrepreneurs" and those investors "impact investors" and have conducted courses, programs, and research on both topics for the last 20 years as a business school professor at Duke and Columbia Universities. In my role as Faculty Director at CASE at Duke, I have taught thousands of 25 to 35-year old MBA students wanting to build careers of impact. And I created a 2-year impact investing fellowship program for Fuqua MBA students. After nearly a decade, our alumni invest for impact globally. I am also a geeky field-builder - breaking down complex topics with current research into frameworks to help experienced practitioners make better decisions. This is my special sauce, and judging by the traction of my work, it’s working. Over 200,000 enterprises have used the B Impact Assessment I co-authored to improve their impact. My co-authored book on high performance impact investing, The Impact Investor, hit #18 in Finance on Amazon and I was invited by the Obama White House and the G7 to recommend new policies to open up impact investing globally. My first online toolkit and course, CASE Smart Impact Capital (casesmartimpact.com), has been running continuously since 2016, helping thousands of individuals and over 95 cohorts of entrepreneurs learn about investing and raising impact capital, with a 94% approval rating from users. And over 40,000 entrepreneurs used a site I created during the pandemic, covidcap.com, to access over $1 trillion of global capital relief. My latest online course, Impact Measurement & Management for the SDGs, went live in September 2021 on Coursera. Produced in partnership with the UNDP, it helps enterprises and investors get better at measuring and managing impacts on people and planet. And it's free: https://IMMforSDGs.com. Please check out CASE i3 at https://centers.fuqua.duke.edu/case/insights/impact-investing/ to join me in making business and capital a force for good.

Adjunct Professor
CurrentTeach elective courses in Duke's daytime MBA program, including Social Entrepreneurship since 2007 and Impact Investing since 2011."I got more [from Cathy's social entrepreneurship class] than I knew was possible. Going in, I thought social entrepreneurship was solely about the social entrepreneur - aka the ability to pitch what you believe in. What I learned was that the systems around the entrepreneur, and the world of entrepreneurship as a whole, demands bigger, more collaborative thinking. This broadening helps me think about my organization, and how I can focus on scaling something that actually gets at solving a root cause for a long time to come.""This has been the most rewarding course I've taken at Fuqua to date. Thank you for giving us such a challenging, stimulating course, Cathy!""It should be said – without your class, I wouldn’t be where I am now and wouldn’t be able to share what I do. I hope I make you proud with it!" --Fuqua '08 alumna Suzanne Smith, Managing Director, Social Impact Architects“Your Impact Investing course was one of my very favorite classes I've taken thus far at Fuqua.""I have to say that social entrepreneurship was an amazing course. As an MPP student with 4 years of previous government experience, I have been struggling with whether returning to the government is the best way to have an impact. I previously viewed the social sector and private sector as a complete dichotomy. Your class has given me an entirely new perspective and a new set of tools for analyzing the alignment of mission, finances, and stakeholders that I can leverage in a broad range of environments. If I had known about the field of social entrepreneurship earlier, I may have chosen an MBA instead of an MPP. Thanks so much for exposing me to this field." --Colin Walsh, Master of Public Policy Candidate, Class of 2014
