Back pain expert, Cathy Mahon, is a physical therapist, kinesiologist and consultant of 30+ years, specializing in chronic pain. In the first half of her career Cathy worked in over 40 facilities, as either a staff PT, travelling therapist, or consultant. This provided a wide view of patient’s experiences in healthcare. Cathy returned home, started a private practice and for the past 20 years she has spent over 3 hours on the initial evaluation of her patients. During this time Cathy noticed a strong connection between limitations in range of motion and the positions that bring the pain on, and further found that addressing those limitations resulted in significant success in alleviating back pain. From that experience, realizing that back pain is often the result of stress on the area due to a person’s unique limitations in range of motion, and understanding the difficulty in improving that range, Cathy helps patients and physical therapists facilitate the evaluation and treatment of back pain from this perspective. She is the developer of a toolset to educate others on the System Limitations Approach to Pain (S.L.A.P.), which identifies the missing factors of chronic discomfort and creates the road map to recovery. Cathy has spoken on this topic on various stages including continuing-education classes for physical therapists, at the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Lab for the Conference of Safety Engineers and at Anne Arundel Medical Center in Annapolis for the spine and joint therapists.
