Placement At St Luke’S Community Hospital Stroke Ward

Market Harborough, England, United Kingdom

Having had previous experience of working with people that have had strokes I wanted to jump straight in and start learning the 'qualified' physiotherapy specific duties. I thoroughly enjoyed this placement even though it was physical and emotionally challenging. It was also my first clinical experience during the Covid-19 pandemic and I soon realised the importance of close contact using video calling or telephoning with family members, that at the time could not visit their loved one.

Placement Physiotherapy Student At Learning Disabilities

Nhs

Leicestershire, England, United Kingdom

This is my first placement as a student physiotherapist. I worked in a community-based therapy team, under the supervision of two clinical educators. We planned our visits daily to service users that required initial physiotherapy contact and ongoing rehab needs. The team had three pathways that an individual could potentially follow (falls, rehab, positioning). Having worked for a community team before I got on well with the logistics of using electronic notes, speaking on the telephone, driving to peoples houses and being flexible in terms of how you work in the community. Furthermore, I learnt a great deal in varying my communication style to suit different people. I found that it is very difficult working with individuals that can't necessarily report or describe pain. Alongside pain reporting, people had more pronounced behaviours that needed particular skills to resolve unwanted behaviour. I started to develop resolution of unwanted behaviour by watching and learning from my educators, then I would apply this to my sessions that I lead independently.

Therapy Support Practitioner - Band 4

Nhs

Jul 2016 - Sep 2018

Therapy Support Worker - Band 3

Nhs

Nottingham, United Kingdom

Band 3 Therapy Support Worker: Based at Nottingham City Hospital, I assisted physiotherapy treatments within the first few weeks after a person had experienced a stroke and the aim being to try and regain lost movement. A particular focus is working on a patients upper limbs. So in addition to physio treatment, my job was to carry out hand and arm exercises with particular patients to increase sensation and possible control. Inputting statistics for the team was also a role in my job. Therefore, contact time between therapists and patients needed to be recorded on the database on a monthly basis. A high priority whilst working on the ward is to carry out cleaning procedures to a high level to reduce the risk of transmission of infection. I also worked with the Stroke Outreach Service within the community to carry on with an individual’s rehabilitation, once they have been discharged from the hospital. I helped patients to carry out their physiotherapy exercise programs and also occupational therapy tasks.

Jan 2016 - Jul 2016

Junior Gym Instructor

Measham Leisure Centre

I held Junior Gym sessions for children aged 10 to 13 years. The class would have up to nine children that were all working towards their own individual aims. I was there to encourage the children, to focus and to provide challenges for them in a safe environment. In addition to the Junior Gym sessions, I also conducted gym inductions for adults joining the leisure centre membership scheme. Occasionally, I covered fitness classes, where I created and delivered circuit classes to music.

Sep 2015 - Jan 2016

Supervisor

Hampton, London

As a weekend Supervisor at Waitrose I had to assign routine tasks to my colleagues. My ethos for running a smooth shift was to assign the right people to the right job and that involved finding out what my colleagues enjoyed doing the most and what they were most efficient at. I found that positively reinforcing them at a task promoted them to consistently work well, creating a positive team spirit. In addition, my role was to be versatile and adapt to different jobs and situations presented to me. Whether I had to spend the majority of the time stacking shelves or helping customers with their enquiries.

Lifeguard

Twickenham, United Kingdom

When working as a lifeguard at Virgin Active I had regular first aid training and NPLQ updates to keep me up to date with the latest ways to deal with pool and medical incidences. Member safety was top of the list, but it was also important to provide a welcoming poolside by keeping good Brand Standards.
