My research within the CRC group is titled 'And the rest is history. Archiving women architects...'. The Curatorial Research Collective (CRC) is an interdisciplinary research and design group that critically engages with the theories and practices of architecture culture, questioning their multiple discourses and broader societal frameworks. While our collective research endeavour is varied—ranging from exhibitions and archives to the digital and physical space of institutions, from biennials to themed environments, we operate with the conviction that thinking is collective, and that the culture of what is curatorial is in permanent flux. Embedded within the chair of Architecture History and Theory at the Department of the Built Environment at TU Eindhoven, the CRC is directed by dr. Sergio M. Figueiredo and supported by Prof. Bernard Colenbrander.Enacting both practical and theoretical approaches through research, exhibitions, and public programs since 2016, the CRC’s research projects have been presented, among others, at the Dutch Design Week, CASA Vertigo at TU/e, Shunck, the VAI/deSingel, and Het Nieuwe Instituut. My PhD research is supported by a grant from the Van Beek-Donner Foundation.

In december the annual publication of the Rotterdam Committee for Building Easthetics and Monuments was presented. Since edition 2015 I have been producing and writing these publications in collaboration with the committee and others involved at the Municipality of Rotterdam. The reports give an overview of the activities of the committee and the way the work is done. They combine a visual impression of the projects that were reviewed with a foreword by the head of the committee, a central essay that offers insights in the thoughts and reflections of the committee and a practical report on the work. Very proud of the newest in a series of beautiful booklets with embossed covers and pamphlet stitch. This year's cover: a section of the Meuse Tunnel which is undergoing restorative renovation. (graphic design by Friends for Brands, Tymen Cieraad).

    Lecturer Architectural History
Artez University Of The Arts Oct 2020 - Jun 2023
    Arnhem
History offers us the opportunity to trace back methods, materials, styles, programs and other aspects of architecture. This gives us a deeper understanding of buildings and their surroundings, which is a valuable asset to any architect and urban designer. Architectural history makes us aware of the long lines of development that designers are part of, which are humbling and inspiring at the same time. As lecturer of Architectural History at the ArtEZ Academy of Architecture, I introduce first year students of Architecture and Urban Planning in the history of their discipline, always connecting todays practice with history that surrounds us in many – sometimes surprising – ways. Students of the second year will embark on a journey of reviewing architectural history along a variety of lines like gender, sustainability, participation and more, sharpening their own views on the way, equipping themselves for a discipline that is intimately connected with existing buildings and environments.

    Researcher
Future Urban Regions Research Group Jan 2018 - Jan 2021
    Amsterdam Area, Netherlands
Future Urban Regions focuses on researching the existing urban landscape, its systems and ecosystems, developing new design instruments to tackle the multifaceted, intertwined, cross-sectoral design issues that are often called ‘wicked problems’. Our use of space and the way we organize it, is changing. With this comes the opportunity to work on the urban energy performance, economic issues and social and cultural structures. Research by design offers us exciting opportunities as a tool for working with local governments and stakeholders on these issues. The research of Future Urban Regions is embedded in the education programs of the six Academies for Architecture in the Netherlands. The FUR-team: Erik Frijters, Willemijn Lofvers, Thijs van Spaandonk, Jet van Zwieten, Christopher de Vries, Matthijs Ponte, David Dooghe and Catja Edens

With Loes Sikkes I prepared a short course for part time students of graphic design. In two sessions I gave them a concise overview of Dutch architecture since 1900. Also we went outside and did an excursion visiting six great buildings almost on the threshold of the Academy. The students work in small groups and develop a way to bring their building to the attention of an assigned targetgroup with a medium of thier choice. For example the Public Library for teenagers, the City Church Het Steiger for Expats and the Laurenskerk for Young Urban Professional Parents (Yupps).

  • Cast Centrum Voor Architectuur En Stedenbouw Tilburg
    Head
Cast Centrum Voor Architectuur En Stedenbouw Tilburg Aug 1998 - Jun 2001
    Tilburg Area, Netherlands
As head of this local center for architecture I was in charge of programming, financing and the daily organization. We did some very exciting projects like 'Tilburg als filmset' for which we assembled all kinds of filmfragments from private Super 8 fragments to professional feature films and art films to compile a day long filmfestival on Tilburg with parallel themed programming. Also: 'Gebouw van nu, monument van de toekomst' ('Today's building, tomorrow's monument') in which we invited the general public to have a look at all the new buildings in the city of Tilburg. Did they have what was needed to become a monument in the future? We provided everyone with free, disposable cameras to take pictures of their monument for the future. Looking back at a period of excitement, discussion and fun at CAST and a great learning environment.

    West 8 1995 - 1998
    Rotterdam Area, Netherlands
At the hayday of superdutch I was in charge of communications at this office run by Adriaan Geuze. West 8 was growing fast and magazines and publishers from all over the world wanted to publish the work. Fresh from university I was thrown into this hyperdynamic and sometimes tough world with a lot of great people in it. Fortunately I managed to keep on swimming and I enjoyed it. At West 8 I worked with real drawings and an archive of 50.000-70.000 actual slides because back then we were yet to cross the threshold to the digital era. During the almost three years I worked here the office grew from 15 to 50 people, a couple of which are still good friends. Up to this very day I profit from lessons learned at West 8.
