After finishing my 2 year program at Anoka Tech, I was looking to grow with a young company and challenge my abilities early on. Prototyping and R&D had always fascinated me. At 20 years old, I started my career at Protofab on a 3-Axis Haas VF2. I began programming in GibbsCam, setting up tooling, designing fixtures, and running my own parts. Lot sizes were anywhere from 1 to 10 pieces. Within a year or so, I started programming for other machinists in the shop where I could refine my skillset, and work with others. Simultaneously, my boss moved me to a Haas VF5 to work on larger projects.Our shop was consistently growing, we entered a transition period where we ended up building a new facility 3x the size. We moved to our new facility in April 2019, and continued to fire on all cylinders. Shortly after, I was moved again to a smaller cell of Haas DT2’s to enter the world of 5-Axis machining. I was working alongside 2 younger machinists who were in the same place I was just a few years before. From leading by example, I ended up helping them boost their skillsets early on. Upon transitioning into a 5-Axis role, order quantities and customer demands increased. My boss and I discussed how to get to the business to the next level and what equipment we would need to scale the operation further. We decided to purchase some Haas UMC-500’s, and ultimately incorporated an automation system alongside.In my experience at Protofab, I’ve had the opportunity to machine a wide variety of different materials, and have transitioned into being the guy in the shop that leads production projects out of materials like Inconel and Titanium.
