About Carlos Valentim

I work as a Data Analyst Consultant at Franklin Cummings Technology, where I combine data, math, and computational tools to help develop processes that can impact the college positively and guide decision-making. I originally come from academia and have a multidisciplinary background that allows me to work as a data scientist and researcher. I have worked on complex projects, both solo and with teammates, where I crafted abstract ideas into models and ran experiments (numerical simulations).Over the last years, I have published more than 200 scientific papers on respected journals, received more than 100 academic citations, contributed as a peer-reviewer, gave technical presentations on conferences, and was awarded for a scientific communication project. I'm also a self-taught learner for life with hundreds of hours devoted to online learning and complementary education.𝐓𝐨𝐨𝐥𝐬 𝐈 𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐮𝐬𝐞𝐝:Python, SQL, Postgres, Numpy, Pandas, Matplotlib, Pyplot, Scikit-LearnPower Bi, Excel, MATLAB, Simulink, Mathematica, Git (Version control), LaTeX𝐈'𝐦 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡:Mathematical Modeling, Differential Calculus, Basic physics, Numerical Optimization, Statistical modeling, Time Series Analysis, Data Wrangling and Exploratory Analysis, Machine Learning, Data visualization,Neural networks and deep learning, Academical Writing, Storytelling and scientific communicationI believe we should employ education and technology to improve society. I have a special appreciation when working on projects towards education, healthcare, biotechnology, and sustainability.

At the Institutional Research and Reporting office, I worked with members of the Academic Affairs Team to provide the college with timely information including the following:- All sorts of reporting from different databases- Statistical analyses concerning different types of data (retention, admission's funnel, student profile, career services, program evaluation and assessment, and others).- Research (marketing, job placement, program overviews)- Predictive modeling (enrollment projection, demographic trends, risk factors). I also worked alongside deans and directors from different departments providing insights and pertinent information derived from the school's database.
  • Universidade De São Paulo
    Graduate Research Assistant (Phd Candidate)
Universidade De São Paulo Feb 2019 - May 2023
School Of Animal Science And Food Enginering (Usp/Fzea)
In my thesis I propose mathematical models to tackle cancer-related phenomena. This research project is the culmination of all the interdisciplinary building blocks of my formation and truly allows me to combine math, engineering, and life sciences. Working with my supervisors Prof. Dr José Rabi and Prof. Dr. Sergio David, I have collaborated with international researchers and published in respected scientific journals. Firstly, I used Mathematica to find out that data-fitted fractional-order ODE models can better predict tumor growth compared to their traditional counterparts (Article 1). Then, I proposed variable-order fractional profiles to approach a multistep model for tumor growth (a novel contribution in the area, as described in Article 2). I also published a review on mathematical oncology, discussing on the several tools being used in the area and how fractional calculus along with an interdisciplinary approach might be a good choice (Article 3). Finally, I employed Python to program a stochastic cellular automaton and the model can provide a spatial-temporal scenarios of a tumor with multiple possible clinical outcomes (Article 4).During the PhD, I was able to collaborate with other ongoing projects, going from crushing EEG data with time-series techniques (Extra Article 1), contributing to a diffusion model of a brain tumor (Extra Article 2), and work on a transport-phenomena approach to study COVID spreading (Extra Article 3). I also used Python to apply time- and frequency domain methods to identify and classify EEG time series concerning cognitive performance (Extra Article 4) Finally, I contributed with a model for cardiac electric dynamics (Extra Article 5), which was selected as the cover page for the issue it was published.
  • Universidade De São Paulo
    Teaching Assistant
Universidade De São Paulo Aug 2019 - Jul 2020
School Of Animal Science And Food Enginering (Usp/Fzea)
I assisted Prof. Dr. José Rabi on the administration of the course "Numerical Methods" to both Biosystems and Food Engineering undergraduate students under the Teaching Improvement Program (PAE). This paid internship has contributed with two major improvements in my career: 1) The capacity of dealing with students directly (e.g., solving doubts, explaining convoluted concepts) and 2) learning how to teach (from the vast experience of the professor I was assisting) and how to supervise hands-on sessions.Important observation: The Coronavirus Pandemic started while this internship was still ongoing. This forced the discipline to completely change to an online basis practically overnight. The sudden change taught me a lot about distance teaching and how plans are meant to be adapted. Check bellow to see some of my teaching videos in computational workshops using Excel in the official University of São Paulo's online portal (in PT-BR).
  • Universidade Estadual De Campinas
    Graduate Research Assistant (Master'S Degree)
Universidade Estadual De Campinas Aug 2016 - Jul 2018
    School Of Mechanical Engineering (Fem)
The research to write my master’s thesis included the mathematical modeling of a thermoacoustic engine. This type of motor can be used as a tool for energy regeneration. I proposed a linear model using fractional calculus, which improved the capacity of representation of phenomena that occurred in the engine, potentially decreasing the need for prototypes.- The project involved complex themes such as thermodynamics, transport phenomena and acoustics- I proposed an analytical solution for the linear model for thermoacoustics using the power fractional series method.- The project was mostly developed using Mathematica- There were data comparison and fitting to experimental data on MATLAB.- The results were discussed on two international conferences.

Summer-project as part of the Science Without Borders Program. The goal was to study and understand a simplified model of an airship using Matlab. A more comprehensive version of the model was being considered to be used in the European project MAAT (Multibody Advanced Airship for Transport). My supervisor during the project was Prof. Dr. Rebecca Margetts.
  • Universidade De São Paulo
    Undergraduate Research Assistant
Universidade De São Paulo Aug 2012 - Jul 2014
School Of Animal Science And Food Enginering (Usp/Fzea)
With two consecutive scholarships, I applied the fractional calculus to model dynamical systems using MATLAB and Simulink. The work developed helped me to develop the following skills:- Mathematical modeling and optimization of integral-differential systems (Euler-Lagrange systems and PID controllers);- Programming, development and logical thinking (MATLAB);- Creativity, by thinking on the several applications of the fractional calculus in engineering;- Power of synthesis, when learning to cram important information on papers and reports that I wrote;- Communication, through the several oral presentations and posters; In addition, it is worth highlighting that this experience presented me to the scientific method, allowing me to contribute for research on Applied Mathematics and publishing in two important peer-reviewed journals (Mathematics; Computers and Electronics in Agriculture) before I had even graduated.
  • Universidade De São Paulo
    Extension Research Assistant
Universidade De São Paulo Aug 2011 - Jul 2012
School Of Animal Science And Food Enginering (Usp/Fzea)
I worked on a extension project (with a scolarship by the university and supervised by Prof. Dr. Sergio Adriani David) named "Calculus for Colouring". The project explored visual solutions for teaching the contents administered in traditional modules of Calculus at engineering courses. The objective was to propose a complement to standard textbooks that helped the students to absorb the key concepts on the subject through figures and colour patterns.Along with my supervisor and another collaborator, we discussed the results of this project in a national conference and published the main findings in an international peer-reviewed journal (see below).
