My role of Gardener II includes the design, installation, and maintenance of annual plant designs at the Estate’s ticketing center. I strategize with my team to cover the maintenance of diverse landscapes, utilizing power tools properly in the gardens. I have received a NC pesticide applicator’s license to responsibly apply pesticide and herbicide when needed. I also assist other crews with large projects such as installing large plantings. This role requires a fair amount of solo work and quick critical thinking in the field. I also work with an intern in the summers as well as a Gardener I on my team that I’ve helped train as well as educate in the field on proper procedures and plant identification.

Managed, coordinated, and implemented horticulture-based educational programs for four local schools as well as educational programs for the general public with focus on vegetables and perennials. Led weekly garden classes with four schools in their own gardens, implementing my own designs and providing hands on education in garden maintenance. Managed planting, harvesting, and upkeep of three commercial vegetable gardens. Assisted installation and maintenance crews in a range of projects including installing hardscapes, landscapes, and general residential landscape maintenance.

As Garden Manager my tasks include developing garden plans, maintaining the garden, plan garden workdays, recruit volunteers, harvesting produce, and provide families at the YMCA with produce from the garden. I also develop, organize, and implement creative programs in the garden for a variety of groups, mainly kid's classes. During my time at the YMCA I received a $7,500 Grant for the garden.
