Profile bio

About Caylee Gilberg

I chose an Industrial & System Engineering major because I have an affection for numbers but also for the manufacturing and development process as a whole. I am passionate about using my engineering skills to benefit the user’s needs, make things more efficient, and work alongside and hopefully impact any community I find myself a part of. I decided to attend the University of San Diego because it is a campus who values the connection between faculty and students, provides many hands-on experiences, and prides themselves in doing all they can to help us succeed. It is a designated Changemaker Campus, meaning the university focuses on innovation and social change. It is all about empowering and giving students a space where they are able to practice changemaking. I have recently graduated with a BS/BA in Industrial and Systems Engineering and am confident that I will be able to positively contribute to the industry in more ways than one. I find myself very successful and productive in collaboration with others, while also being well-driven and in turn productive individually as well. I am looking forward to new challenges and working alongside/learning from coworkers in the workplace. Through projects, being the general manager (and player) of the University of San Diego Women’s Club Soccer team, and being a teacher assistant for various courses, I have gained a multitude of experience in the workplace and been able to develop many skills such as communication, problem solving, and an understanding for the various aspects of a successful system.

Listed skills include Teaching, Teamwork, Aesthetics, Problem Solving, and 3 others.

Operations Research Ii Teaching Assistant

San Diego, California, United States

After taking numerous classes including Operations Research II (OR II) with Dr. Jae Kim, I was asked to be a teacher’s assistant for two sections of OR II my senior year. I graded and provided feedback on all homework assignments, case studies, and their end of the semester project. Through the time I spent grading for this class, like the many other classes I graded for, I was further exposed to material that is vital to my understanding of various aspects of Industrial and Systems Engineering. This was one of the most challenging classes I had to grade as when problems are math heavy there are typically various methods the students could use to come up with the right answer. I had to make sure that I understood the material well enough to be able to determine if their method was right even if I didn't have the answer key for that method. Even though I had to balance the grading workload with my own courses and extracurriculars, I found this time to be valuable for my eventual exertion into the workforce.

Engr Probability And Statistics Teaching Assistant

San Diego, California, United States

I was fortunate to have the opportunity to work alongside many of my professors over my years at the University of San Diego as a teacher’s assistant. After taking Engineering Probability and Statistics spring of my sophomore year, with Professor Thidarat Tinnakornsrisphap, I was asked to be her teacher’s assistant and continued to work alongside her for the remainder of my undergraduate career. Over the course of that time, I was a TA for approximately 150 students. I was responsible for consistently checking their gradebook and inputting those grades into an excel spreadsheet. When they had their weekly homework assignments submitted on paper, I would be tasked with grading those and inputting their scores into both the excel and their gradebook. When it came to their quizzes, I had a meeting with my professor the day of each quiz to go through the answer keys and to pick up the manila folders containing the students’ quizzes. Then I would spend a couple hours for the next two or so days grading them; writing comments, feedback, and showing work on both their quiz and their gradebook on Blackboard. My goal was to help facilitate their learning even after an assignment is completed. Through this experience, I was able to continue to further my exposure to probability and statistics which was a class I thoroughly enjoyed taking and putting time into studying. It helped me continue to expand my understanding of the concepts which will be very beneficial in the workplace.

Introduction To Engineering Teaching Assistant

San Diego, California, United States

These beginner classes of engineering are the foundations for the rest of the major. Being a TA for this class means that I not only have seen these lectures multiple times, but have a more solid foundation which has increased my understanding for even more advanced topics within my major. Each week I would receive a set of material to go over by myself. I would then have a meeting with the professor at the beginning of the week to clarify any misunderstandings or unfamiliar lecture points. After that I would attend the two two-hour lectures a week. I was in charge of assisting the professor (Dr. Melissa Gibbons) and meeting with all of the students. I would walk around the classroom meeting with all the groups; answering any questions and figuring out who needed more attention from the professor. Through this I was able to create connections with the students and become a mentor for them throughout their time at USD. I still remember to this day who my TA was in Engr 101, and I still stay in touch with him. He was there for me even outside of the class which gave me a valuable resource while I navigated the new scenery of college and even now as I find myself in the real-world post-graduation. I not only helped the students in class, but I also met with various students outside of class time to help assist them with homework or go over missed points on assignments. Being a TA for this class was very beneficial for me as it was a more hands on and interactive experience than some of the other classes I helped with. I learned a lot about the importance of constructive feedback which was super important to me as when I am in a class that is something I value when I receive an assignment back and that is the best way to continue improving. I also became very effective at answering students’ questions without eliminating the opportunity for them to be challenged and gain something from the activity.

Soccer Referee

Washington, United States

It was an honor to have refereed for 2.5 years and to have been a small part of all of those players soccer careers. Having played soccer since I was four years old, I have a greater understanding of what youth sports means to a child and I wanted to help any way I could to provide that experience for others. Due to the extensive amount of time my own soccer took up in my life, I never had the chance to get a job like many other teenagers in my grade. Becoming a referee for Washington Youth Soccer allowed me to have a self-scheduling job; allowing me to pick up games to ref around my own game and practice schedule. With this job I worked alongside other referees to ensure the safety of the players and coaches whole enforcing the laws of the game. I had to become quick at making judgement calls, be good at mediating and preventing fights from escalating, as well as be able to stand my ground and be confident in myself and any call I made. I was in charge of working games, submitting game scores post game, and filling out game reports to the league and associations. I also attended yearly referee trainings where we would discuss rule changes, any issues we came across over the year, and got to come together as a ref community.
