Research Data Scientist, led ICHEC’s Earth Observation groupManaged ICHEC’s contribution to the European Space Agency atmospheric Validation Data Centre project.Managed the development of an Object Store of Earth Observation data that is relevant to Ireland and as backup store for ESA Sentinel-5 data.Developed and deployed a high performance virtual workstation aimed at making Sentinel-1 Synthetic Aperture RADAR (SAR) accessible to Ireland’s Earth Observation research community. Mentored Enterprise Ireland sponsored SMEs, who are working with Earth Observation data. Contributed to H2020 proposals as a work package leader.Advised various Irish Government institutions on the potential of Earth Observation data.

Senior Research Fellow at the Policy Research and Innovation Centre of the EU Commissions.I worked at the Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Unit at the Institute for the Protection and Security of the Citizen Provided input into the ongoing development of the Blue Hub a GIS based project for the global tracking of shipping. Enhanced the system by adding operational data from meteorology and oceanography forecast models, including daily sea ice extent maps for the Arctic. Integrated OSPAR, HELCOM and Arctic Council environmental data into the Blue Hub.Constructed a catalogue of marine and atmospheric science data that collated data under the theme of maritime and fisheries. Advised colleagues and mentored junior scientists and engineers on the properties and sources of data in the Earth and Environmental Science domains. Advised the Marine and Ocean Data Expert Group (MODEG) and EMODnet of the EU Commission on distributed data networks and data server technologies in the Marine Science domain. Advised colleagues on the potential of OpenData to support Blue Growth, i.e. growth in the marine/maritime economy. Contributed to the output of the Union for the Mediterranean Stakeholders Conference on Blue Investment and Jobs in the Mediterranean.Developed links with NOAA and promoted NOAA data brokering technology as a solution to unifying distributed environmental data networks.

Project Manager/Scientists & Technical Analyst for the Marine Work Package of the Pan European ENVIROFI Project, an EU funded program in support of the Future Internet Public Private Partnership. Managed budget and project plan, and managed communication and reporting to multiple EU partners; performed risk analysis, participated in EU Commission project reviews. Presented project findings at science and technology conferences. Analysed existing business requirements, scoped new requirements and refocused the project accordingly to ensure a successful delivery; developed functional specs and wrote comprehensive documentation. Researched and reviewed web enabling technologies for Internet of Things and Sensor Web concepts, such as various Open Geospatial Consortium standards for interoperability. Developed prototype software that demonstrates new data broker/mediator technologies that bridge the gap between scientific and mainstream computing.

Responsible for software engineering and system analysis for environmental management software solutions; provided scientific and technical consultancy to government agencies and private companies. Led project scoping, determined schedules and budgets, defined functional specs, facilitated technical meetings with multiple partners, and developed proposals. Built a High Performance Compute Cluster to run a Regional Ocean Model of the Irish Sea. Architected and developed MarGIS, a state-of-the-art, user-friendly management tool for the integration of 3rd party computational models into ESRI’s Arcview (a GIS application).
