About Christopher Bernal

As a PhD Student and Researcher in the Management of Complex Systems program at UC Merced I am focused on diving into the Gaming and Esports industries to more deeply understand how gamers collaborate to build relationships online. There are a lot of assumptions about gamers and youth in our society, when in fact they are some of the greatest, strategic, and innovative minds we have...they just aren't positioned to showcase their potential outside of the game. I hope to shine light on the complex activities and social capital development that is happening within gaming communities and the value this understanding can hold for education and organizations that are transitioning to remote/hybrid work. I am also working on Esports Management curriculum with UC Merced Extension to offer High School Students opportunities to learn about different career fields within a space they are passionate about and already interact with on a daily basis. I also play League and TFT or watch Twitch everyday to stay connected to the changing landscape. I pride my Servant Leadership on my intuitive decision making, and my adaptibiltiy to teammates needs on my self-awareness. My goal is always to be one of the best teammates you'll ever have...on the court/field or in-game.Goals: -Understand Gamer Communities at a deeper level to develop more productive gamification programs in Education and Organizations.-Showcase Merced's beauty, undervalued talent, and for the massive opportunity it is.

Learning how to run the accounting and financial aspects of a business as I incorporate my past organizational knowledge and adapt to new situations. This role is a balancing act between looking into what the best decision is for the future, providing the team with what they need to be most effective today, and helping everyone build their own personal financial credibility and stability in case of an unforeseen situation happening tomorrow. I'm also my company's largest investor both through my time and reinvestment of money into people to continue building this monster. Essentially, I spend most of my day thinking about how to make the money we have keep the ship afloat at this rapidly growing pace and make moves on additional financing options as needed.

In this role I learned first hand about all the stages required within the research process. My first time writing up the research plan, to developing the interview protocols, securing IRB, securing research participants, data analysis, and finally writing...which all took longer than I initially expected and nobody prepares you for the setbacks. Our study on understanding barriers to technology adoption within almond and pistachio growers in the Central Valley opened my eyes to the Systems perspective needed for true technology adoption and implementation during technology development. Our interviews showcased the Digital Disruption that comes with attempting to transition historical farm practices and to begin collaborating with technology in new ways that help with decision making. A beautiful experience that I will build on as I adapt my knew skills and experiences to future research.
