Chelsea Boccagno, Phd phone numbers
Hello! I'm Chelsea. I'm currently a T32 post-doc fellow at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health (CAUSALab), Harvard University (Nock Lab), & Massachusetts General Hospital (Dauten Family Center for Bipolar Treatment Innovation). My latest research focuses on using causal inference methods to identify what suicide prevention strategies are effective or ineffective. I'm also a therapist (not yet licensed) treating adult patients who struggle with a range of conditions, including bipolar disorder, depression, borderline personality disorder, anxiety, and obsessive-compulsive disorder. In June 2023, I completed my PhD in clinical science at Harvard University, and my pre-doctoral internship at Massachusetts General Hospital/Harvard Medical School. My research in grad school focused on understanding non-suicidal self-injury (self-cutting, self-hitting, etc.) and suicide across individuals with serious mental illness (bipolar disorder, major depressive disorder, borderline personality disorder). In my dissertation, I examined how our sense of who we are is associated with our emotional experiences, and explored how this relationship can look different for people with and without self-injurious behaviors.A big research interest for me is also identity in its own right--specifically, our ability to have a flexible sense of self (presenting differently in different places, the multiple selves we possess, etc.). In psychology, we don't yet have a good grasp on how and when the ability to have a flexible identity is helpful, or why some aspects of identity flexibility (ex: feeling like we don't know who we are) lead to psychopathology. Part of my research aims to better understand this unclear space. In one project, I'm looking at social media content (e.g., Instagram photos) alongside self-reports of identity perception to explore how our social media posts might facilitate (or hinder) identity maintenance.
