“Nothing will work unless you do.” This quote from Maya Angelou has been a guiding mantra throughout my academic career and it has instilled in me the importance of taking action—especially as we confront the harsh realities of climate change and environmental degradation.Since commencing my Ph.D. studies in environmental law and governance, I have dedicated the last 10 years of my life to raising environmental consciousness and awareness of human rights through my research and teaching. As a person of service, I am proud to extend my legacy of this work through the students I’ve taught, the master’s and doctoral candidates I’ve supervised, and the research I’ve published.Select Highlights:• Received North-West University’s 2022 Faculty Teaching Award • Accepted to attend the Global Scholars Academy with Harvard Law School’s Institute for Global Law and Policy in 2021 • Earned C2 rating as an established researcher with the National Research Foundation of South Africa• Requested to serve as an expert consultant and contributor regarding the establishment of environmental courts and tribunals in Africa for the United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP) publication on “Environmental Courts and Tribunals – 2021: A Guide for Policy Makers” Currently based at the Max Planck Institute for Comparative Public Law and International Law as part of my Alexander von Humboldt Fellowship, my research focuses on environmental pragmatism. Through discourse analysis, I explore the intersection of law and environmental politics to gain insights into the social, economic, and political dynamics that often contribute to the recurrent failure of environmental commitments and promises. Outside of academia, I have supported cases during a brief period of legal practice, and I provide freelance legal consulting to those requiring basic legal work and advisory services related to environmental practice, legal drafting (including heads of argument), and general research in related areas.
