As a senior systems architect I was the certified enterprise architect at Mackenzie, and championed the introduction of the systems and enterprise architecture role. I developed delivered classes on architecture and promoted the role across disciplines and the management team. I also led the definition of a roadmap for the integration of back office systems as well as developing the roadmap for migrating back office and web applications from a AIX/DB2 back end to virtualized AIX environments and Oracle databases to ensure ongoing supportability of key financial management applications.

Y2K was the name of the game for much of my time at NxTrend/Groupe Laurier/Infor, and I led the analysis and delivery of the Y2K upgrade projects for all of NxTrend's Canadian customers. This brought me into contact with a variety of different companies and industries, and helped develop a clear understanding of the role ERP solutions played in them. Groupe Laurier acquired the NxTrend Canadian division, and with the change I spent the next year defining the requirements for, implementing, and administering AIX severs as well as managing application environments for internal and customer systems.

At Brains II I led a team of software developers and infrastructure specialists managing a transitional Varnet ERP application in Progress on SCO UnixWare, as well as it's conversion to a DB2 back office system.

Talking a dispatcher from Hawaii through restarting a crashed UNIX server in the dead of night was par for the course on any given day at MCC. The role also required managing the technical support queue for 6 analysts, installing and repairing computer and mobile communication systems on garbage trucks, and writing programs and UNIX scripts to manage servers remotely.

Being a research associate at McMaster's Tandem Accelerator Lab called for a little of everything. One day I would be analyzing data looking for patterns of decay in nuclei spinning so rapidly they were deformed to two or three times their normal size. Another might find me writing code in Fortran and C to do the same. The next would find me working a night shift at the accelerator at Chalk River waiting for the machine to go ping. In between I contributed to scholarly articles on the subject, and proof-read the theses of graduate students in the department. The next might well take me back to the beginning again.
