During my thesis work I performed a small molecule screen for inhibitors of the RNA-binding protein MSI1. MSI1 is upregulated in cancers of neural and epithelial lineage, and is implicated in proliferation and differentiation of stem and progenitor cells. I identified a small molecule metabolite inhibitor of MSI1 function, and characterized a novel role for MSI1 as a lipid biosynthetic regulatory factor. This discovery ties MSI1 to a variety of functions, including energy storage, lipid signaling, and proliferation.
