The University of Michigan College of Pharmacy Office of Experiential Education provides Doctor of Pharmacy students with a structured program of participation in the practice of pharmacy. The goals of the various Introductory and Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experiences are to help students acquire practice skills and judgment and develop the level of confidence and responsibility needed for entry into the pharmacy profession. Introductory Pharmacy Practice Experiences (IPPEs) are spread throughout the first three years of the Doctor of Pharmacy program and the Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experiences (APPEs) encompass the final year of the program. The experiential education program includes more than 200 practice sites that represent the breadth of professional opportunities available to pharmacists. Although the majority of sites are located in southeastern Michigan, the College has affiliations with practice sites throughout the country. At all sites students work under the close supervision of licensed pharmacists (known as preceptors) who help students understand how to apply classroom learning to daily practice.

Work in the Shafer lab seeks to understand how networks of clock neurons orchestrate rhythmic behavior. The fly Drosophila melanogaster has been a valuable model system for the molecular and neural basis of circadian timekeeping. The fly's molecular clock is built of a small group of genes with high homology to those of mammals. Furthermore, the neuronal basis of timekeeping also appears to be based on similar building blocks throughout the animal kingdom. The Shafer lab employs anatomical, genetic, and live-imaging techniques in Drosophila to discover how time is kept within the brain and how it is used to orchestrate daily and seasonal changes in behavior.

The Society for Women’s Health Research (SWHR) is the thought leader in research on biological differences in disease and is dedicated to transforming women’s health through science, advocacy, and education.Founded in 1990 by a group of physicians, medical researchers and health advocates, SWHR aims to bring attention to the myriad of diseases and conditions that affect women uniquely. Due to SWHR’s efforts, women are now routinely included in most major medical research studies and scientists are beginning to consider biological sex as a variable in their research.
