I think my superpower is being there for people. Seems simple enough, but there is a great deal of reassurance knowing that you can talk to someone, whether it’s to bounce ideas off of them or just knowing that you have someone there who will listen. Having been a tutor and a success coach at community college, I understand that everyone across the spectrum has a rich complexity of needs, which all require patience, attention, and a willingness to engage. At the same time, I want to help lift up my community so that we can all thrive independently together. That requires promoting individual skills like critical thinking and resource awareness, so I employ strategies like guided questioning to provide the scaffolding for others to figure these matters out for themselves.These experiences in public education really helped cultivate a deep sense of empathy and a perspective centered on diversity, which both serve to inform my work in design as well. I use the lens of human-centered design to understand the comfort zones of psychology, taking into careful consideration accessibility, cognitive load, and intuitiveness—all of which require breadth of knowledge ranging from cognitive psychology to frontend development to sociology. My work in design then feeds back into my work in education, where I structure lessons and tutoring tactics to the preferences of my students.I also apply the principles I learn to myself, as I engage in perpetual personal development. There is no such thing as perfection; perfection is stagnation. There is always more to learn and room to grow. That’s why I’m always on the lookout for ways to refine my organizational methods and improve my quality of life. One of my hobbies is collecting skills. Right now, I’m learning HTML, CSS, and Javascript to assist me in user experience (UX) design. I’m learning Japanese as well, since I think everyone should know at least two languages to expand their creativity and opportunities abroad. We all live in this vast, interconnected world, so I think a global mindset is important and can even help your own neck of the woods.tl;dr I value bettering the community and advancing the boundaries of our collective knowledge, which I participate in through education and design.
